What goes into containers around Burnett Heads

Locally it's mostly site storage and consumables for contractors on the port precinct and the industrial land behind it, marine kit for charter operators and private owners — outboards, ground tackle, safety equipment and canvas between seasons — and lock-up space on holiday and rural-residential blocks that sit empty part of the week. Find your job below for the size and grade we'd usually send.

Port, marina and village

Burnett Heads is where the Burnett River meets the sea, and it asks for three different kinds of container. The Port of Bundaberg and its bulk sugar terminal anchor the industrial end. The marina and boat harbour are in the middle. Then there's the village, with its lighthouse, beaches and older streets, and holiday homes along the water towards Oaks Beach.

Each needs different advice, so we ask which part of Burnett Heads you're in before anything else. There's more detail in our guide to containers at the river mouth.

Contractors and the port precinct

Contractors working around the port and industrial land need secure site storage for tools, consumables and spares while a job runs. For a fixed-term project, hiring a 20ft is often simplest: it arrives when the job starts and leaves when it finishes. Anything storing fuel, solvents or oils belongs in a dangerous goods container, which is ventilated and bunded.

Sealed hardstand near the port makes for easy deliveries, with plenty of room to manoeuvre and nothing overhead. Most of the planning goes into site access rules, so let us know about inductions or gate procedures when you enquire.

Boat owners and the marina

Boat owners use containers for outboards, spare parts, ropes, anchors, safety gear and covers between seasons. That keeps gear off the boat and out of the garage. Near the water, choose a used cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight, or a new one, rather than an as-is unit that is sold as seen and not watertight.

Rinse the salt off everything before it goes in, fit vents, and keep gear off the floor. Condensation does more damage to stored gear than rain.

Height at the river mouth

Much of Burnett Heads is low-lying, and storm tide combined with a river in flood is the local risk. A container keeps rain out from above, but it's not sealed against water rising around it. Water gets in at the door seals, and an empty container can float.

Choose the highest firm ground on the block, stand the container on blocks or pavers, and leave room for a truck to lift it out if a warning gives you time. Bundaberg Regional Council's flood and storm-tide mapping covers Burnett Heads. Our flood guide explains more.

Burnett Heads, Oaks Beach, Port Bundaberg, the industrial land along the port road, and the cane country back towards Bundaberg. Further up the coast, north of the river mouth, is Moore Park Beach. Bargara is just down the coast.

Truck access in Burnett Heads

Which end you are at decides everything. Onto sealed hardstand near the port this is about as simple as our work gets: nothing overhead and nothing to thread through. The old village is the opposite — tight frontages, low verandah roofs, big old figs over the verge, and service wires that look higher than they are until a sidelifter puts its legs out. Off the sealed ground it is mostly sand, and sand under a loaded truck is its own kind of trouble, so an existing slab or compacted pad is usually the sensible spot. A crane truck will lift one over a fence or down a side access where nothing else fits, which is worth establishing when you enquire rather than on the day. Being at the mouth, we will also ask about level and exposure before anything else, and every unit goes up on blocks or pavers regardless. Steel sheds rain from overhead; it does not hold back a tide.

For any address, the driver needs firm and level standing, room for the truck (around 20m of straight run for a tilt-tray, about 30m of working length for a sidelifter) and nothing low overhead. Getting the truck in on a Wide Bay block covers the detail.

Burnett Heads questions

Can I hire a container for a job at the port?

Yes. For a fixed-term project, hiring a 20ft is often simpler than buying. Tell us about site induction or gate procedures when you enquire, and let us know if you need to store fuel or chemicals, because that needs a dangerous goods unit.

Which container is best for storing boat gear near the marina?

A used cargo-worthy unit (checked wind and watertight) or a new one. Rinse gear before storing it, fit vents and use moisture absorbers to control condensation.

Is a container safe on a low block at Burnett Heads?

It's safe against rain, not rising water. Put it on the highest firm ground, raise it on blocks or pavers, and keep truck access clear so it can be moved to higher ground if needed.

Can a truck get into the older village streets?

Often, yes, but tight frontages, low roofs, big trees and power lines can make it difficult. Send photos of the street and the spot. If a tilt-tray can't get in, a crane truck may be able to lift the container over a fence.
