The Isis: what grows here and what gets stored
Childers sits on the red-soil ridge in the middle of the Isis district, with the Isis Central Mill just outside town and farms in every direction. Cane is still the backbone, but the district has diversified heavily into macadamias, avocados, sweet potatoes, citrus and seasonal small crops. Each brings its own storage problem, and containers have become a normal part of farm infrastructure here.
Macadamia growers want dry, vermin-proof space for equipment and bagged product between harvests. Avocado and small-crop operations need somewhere to keep bins, crates, irrigation parts and packing supplies. Cane growers use them for harvester and planter spares out of season. Almost every one of them has a chemical question.
Spray chemical, audits and DG units
Chemical stored loose in the machinery shed is the most common problem we see on farms around Childers, and it shows up at audit time. Farm assurance schemes such as Freshcare look closely at how chemical is kept — segregated from fuel, food-contact items and people, with spills contained. A compliant dangerous goods container does all three in one unit.
The important part is matching the unit to what you store: the classes, the quantities, and whether anything needs to be kept apart. Bring your chemical register when you call and we'll work from that. Getting it right before it arrives is far cheaper than finding out at an audit.
Harvest crews and security
Picking and packing seasons bring large crews to the district, often from backpacker hostels and labour hire. Tools, ladders, bins and small plant need to be locked away when the crew changes over or the season ends. A container with a lock box — a welded shroud that stops bolt cutters reaching the padlock — is the simplest secure store a farm can add.
Put it where it can be seen from the house or the packing shed. On a big property, visibility deters theft more than any lock.
Red soil and wet-season deliveries
The Childers red soil drains well and carries heavy machinery for most of the year. After a proper storm, though, headlands and farm tracks go greasy on top and soft underneath, and a loaded sidelifter is heavier than a harvester on a small footprint. If there's been a big fall, tell us and we'll hold the delivery until the ground can take it.
The best farm drop points are gravel hardstands beside existing sheds, or the flat ground near the house where the bitumen or gravel ends. They're also the easiest places to reach again if the container ever needs to move.
Sizes and grades for farm use
The 40ft is the usual farm purchase — twice the floor of a 20ft for not much more money, and ideal for bins, crates and bulk inputs. A 20ft suits a workshop parts store. Grade depends on the contents: a used cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight, for anything that must stay dry; an as-is unit, sold as seen and not watertight, is sometimes enough for bins or scrap.
We deliver across the Isis — Childers itself, Apple Tree Creek, Cordalba, Doolbi, Goodwood, Horton, Booyal, and the farms along the Isis Highway towards Bundaberg. For the coast below, see Woodgate.
Truck access in Childers
Farm deliveries here are usually the easy kind — room to swing, firm red soil, and a spot picked well away from the house. The catch is the wet: a headland that carries a ute all year will bog a loaded sidelifter after a decent fall. If the block is soft, ring us and we'll hold the delivery until it firms up rather than make it a recovery job.
For any address, the driver needs firm and level standing, room for the truck (around 20m of straight run for a tilt-tray, about 30m of working length for a sidelifter) and nothing low overhead. Getting the truck in on a Wide Bay block covers the detail.
Childers questions
Will a DG container satisfy my Freshcare auditor?
A compliant dangerous goods container provides the segregation, bunding and ventilation that auditors look for, but the auditor judges your whole set-up, including quantities, labelling and records. Tell us what's on your chemical register and we'll match the unit to it.
Can you deliver a 40ft onto a farm track?
Often, if the track is firm and wide enough for the sidelifter to set its legs down. Straight gravel hardstands work best. After heavy rain we'll wait until the ground can carry the truck rather than risk bogging it.
Is it better to buy or hire for picking season?
For a single season, hiring a 20ft is often the cleanest option. If the same need comes back every year, buying usually works out cheaper within a couple of seasons, and a used unit holds its resale value.
Can a container be moved to another part of the farm later?
Yes. Leave a clear, firm approach and a truck can lift it and move it to a new spot. That's one of the reasons growers choose a container over a fixed shed.
