Shipping containers for Gayndah

Two hours west up the Burnett Highway, and the citrus centre of the state. Mandarins and oranges on the flats, cattle on the hills, and a run we make often enough that Gayndah is routine rather than a special trip.

What goes into containers around Gayndah

Locally it's mostly cartons, trays and packaging bought in bulk before the season starts, netting and covers between uses, ladders, bags and clippers that need to lock up while a large seasonal crew comes and goes, and — further out towards Eidsvold, Monto and the Mount Perry road — fodder, fencing, bore and pump gear on grazing country. Find your job below for the size and grade we'd usually send.

Citrus on the Burnett

Gayndah sits on the Burnett River in the North Burnett and is one of Queensland's main citrus centres, with orchards of mandarins and oranges on the river flats and cattle country in the hills. Mundubbera, just up the river, is citrus country too. The season governs everything here: packing sheds gearing up, seasonal crews arriving, and cartons and packaging bought in bulk in advance.

That creates a lot of storage demand. Growers use containers for packaging, irrigation parts, picking gear and chemical storage. Graziers further out use them for fodder, fencing, pumps and vet supplies. For the full rundown, see our North Burnett buyer's guide.

Inland climate, and why grade matters less here

The North Burnett has hot summers, frosty winters, and much drier air than the coast. That's good news for steel. Corten forms its stable rust layer and settles, so a used container ages slowly here. A well-chosen used cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight, is excellent value for most farm storage. For things that don't need to stay dry, like steel posts, an as-is unit (sold as seen, not watertight) is a sensible way to save money.

The bigger issue inland is heat. A closed steel box in a Gayndah summer gets very hot inside. Vents at both ends help, and so does siting it in the shade of a shed or trees, provided overhead branches aren't in the way of the truck.

Packing season and bulk packaging

Cartons, trays and liners are cheaper bought in bulk ahead of the season, but they're bulky and easily damaged by damp or vermin. A 40ft near the packing shed holds a season's worth, dry and off the ground on pallets. Many operations end up with a 40ft for packaging and a 20ft for tools and parts.

When crews change over at the end of the season, a container with a lock box keeps ladders, bags, clippers and small tools secure until next year.

Orchards, grids and the long drive in

Distance is part of every Gayndah job, so planning matters. Tell us the property name, the turn-off, whether the last stretch is bitumen, gravel or track, and the rating of any grids. Inside the orchard, rows are often narrower and lower than they look from a ute, and irrigation lines run where a sidelifter wants to put its legs. A hardstand next to the shed is almost always the best drop point.

If part of your property is on the river flats, we'll talk about where the container sits before we talk about delivery. The Burnett floods here too, and a container is not sealed against rising water.

Where we deliver in the North Burnett

Gayndah, Mundubbera, Ban Ban Springs, Coalstoun Lakes, Biggenden, Mount Perry, Eidsvold, Monto and the properties in between. For country closer to the coast, see Gin Gin and Childers.

Truck access in Gayndah

Distance is the first thing to sort out rather than the last. Tell us the property name, the turn-off and whether the final stretch is bitumen, gravel or station track, and what any grid along the way is rated to carry. Orchard blocks bring their own hazards: mature rows sit lower and narrower than they look from the ute, and mainlines and risers run right where a truck wants to stand, so a hardstand near the shed almost always beats a gap between the trees. Overhead is the other one — feeders, and the big shade trees nobody has trimmed since the homestead was built. If the property takes in any of the river flats, we will settle where the unit sits before we talk about how it gets there.

For any address, the driver needs firm and level standing, room for the truck (around 20m of straight run for a tilt-tray, about 30m of working length for a sidelifter) and nothing low overhead. Getting the truck in on a Wide Bay block covers the detail.

Gayndah questions

Is a used container good value in Gayndah?

Usually, yes. The drier inland climate is kind to steel, so a used cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight, ages slowly here. It's the best-value choice for most farm storage.

How do I keep a container cool in a Gayndah summer?

Fit vents at both ends, site it in the shade if the truck can still get in, and don't store anything heat-sensitive against the roof or walls. Painting the roof a light colour also helps.

Can you deliver to an orchard between the rows?

It's usually better to use a hardstand near the shed. Orchard rows are often too narrow and low for a truck, and irrigation lines can be damaged. Send us photos and we'll suggest the best spot.

Do you deliver past Mundubbera to Eidsvold and Monto?

Yes, we cover the North Burnett. Tell us the property, the road surface and any grids, and we'll give you a delivered price for the container and freight together.
