Shipping containers for Hervey Bay
An hour and a bit south-east on the Fraser Coast, and one of our busiest runs outside Bundaberg itself. A lot of the demand here is marine, and a lot of it is people downsizing.
What goes into containers around Hervey Bay
Locally it's mostly boat gear and outboards, trailer and 4WD kit staged for the K'gari barge out of River Heads, storage during a downsize or a move into a unit, and stock overflow for the shops around Pialba and Urangan. Find your job below for the size and grade we'd usually send.

What the Bay stores
Hervey Bay has grown quickly, and the demand for storage has grown with it. Retirees downsizing from larger houses, families moving to the Fraser Coast and waiting for a build to finish, and tradies working on the new estates at Nikenbah, Kawungan and Eli Waters all want dry, lockable space without paying a storage facility every month.
The water is the other driver. The marina at Urangan, the barge to K'gari from River Heads, and the fishing and whale-watching trade keep a lot of boats, trailers, 4WD recovery gear and camping kit around the Bay. All of it needs somewhere to go between trips.
K'gari trips and 4WD kit
Anyone who goes across to K'gari regularly builds up a garage full of recovery tracks, compressors, tents, fridges and spare tyres. A 20ft keeps the lot together and ready to load, and it's a lot cheaper than enlarging a garage. Rinse the sand and salt off before it goes in — sand carries salt, and salt trapped in a closed box corrodes metal gear.
For a camper trailer as well, a 40ft usually has room for the trailer and the gear together.
Salt, humidity and which grade to buy
The Esplanade suburbs — Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan — sit close to the water, and salt air affects steel here much as it does at Bargara. Near the foreshore, start at a used cargo-worthy unit, checked wind and watertight, and consider a new single-trip one if it'll stay for years. Further back, in Kawungan, Urraween or Takura, the salt load drops and a well-chosen used unit ages slowly.
Humidity causes more damage than leaks. Warm air closed inside a container condenses on the cold roof overnight and drips onto whatever's below. Vents at both ends and a few moisture absorbers solve most of it.
Getting a truck onto a Bay block
The Bay is flat, which helps. What catches deliveries out is overhead clutter in the older streets — shade sails, patio roofs, street trees and power lines that turn out to be lower than they looked once the sidelifter's legs are out. Newer estates are usually easier, but check your covenants before placing a unit for the long term.
Acreage around Dundowran, Craignish, Booral and Nikenbah is usually easy going, apart from the sandy patches that turn soft after a storm. If the drop point is on grass, send a photo and we'll say whether it will carry the truck.

Truck access in Hervey Bay
The bay suburbs are flat and easy, which keeps freight reasonable. Watch for the things that catch people out on a coastal block: shade sails, patio edges and street trees over the drop point, plus power lines that look higher than they are until a sidelifter puts its legs out. Salt air applies here just as much as it does at Bargara — buy the grade up if it's living outside near the water.
For any address, the driver needs firm and level standing, room for the truck (around 20m of straight run for a tilt-tray, about 30m of working length for a sidelifter) and nothing low overhead. Getting the truck in on a Wide Bay block covers the detail.
Hervey Bay questions
Is a container cheaper than a storage unit in Hervey Bay?
For long-term storage it often is, because you pay for the container once and it keeps its resale value. For a few months, hire can be the better comparison. Tell us how long you need it and we'll price buying and hiring so you can compare.
Can I store a camper trailer in a container?
Many camper trailers fit in a 40ft, and small ones fit in a 20ft. Measure the overall length, width and height with the jockey wheel and anything on the roof, and check it against the door opening before you order.
Do I need approval from Fraser Coast Regional Council?
It depends on how long the container stays and on the zoning. A temporary unit during a move or build is usually treated differently to a permanent one. Check with Fraser Coast Regional Council or your estate covenants before choosing a permanent spot.
How do I stop mould in a container near the beach?
Mould comes from condensation, not leaks. Fit vents at both ends, use moisture absorbers, keep stored items off the floor on pallets, and make sure everything is clean and dry before it goes in.
