Locally it's mostly fodder, fencing and pump gear kept out of the weather, secure storage on properties nobody is living on full time, and fishing and camping kit for the Lake Monduran crowd. Find your job below for the size and grade we'd usually send.

Grazing country and the Kolan

Gin Gin is the service town for a big spread of cattle country, with the Kolan River running through it and Lake Monduran to the north-west. Most of the containers we take out here go onto properties with a long drive, a set of yards and a machinery shed that's already full. They're used for fodder, fencing gear, pumps and poly pipe, vet supplies and the parts that keep a bore running.

It's hard, practical storage, and the grade decision is usually easy. A used cargo-worthy container, checked wind and watertight, keeps feed and electrical gear dry. For fence posts, steel droppers or a wind break, an as-is unit — cheaper, sold as seen and not watertight — can do the job.

Properties that are empty during the week

Plenty of blocks around Gin Gin, Wallaville and the Mount Perry road belong to people who work in town or further away and come out at weekends. An empty property with an open shed is an easy target. A container with a lock box and a good padlock, sited where a neighbour or a passing car can see it, is a much harder one.

If you're setting up a weekender, a container is also the quickest way to get secure storage on the block before there's a shed or a house — no slab, no builder, and it can be moved later.

Boats, camping gear and Lake Monduran

Lake Monduran draws barramundi anglers from across the state, and plenty of them live between Gin Gin and the lake. Boats, outboards, tackle and camping gear take up a lot of room and are exactly what thieves look for. A 20ft takes a small tinny on its trailer with the tackle beside it. A 40ft takes a bigger rig and the camper as well.

Inland the air is dry compared with the coast, so a used unit ages slowly here. Fit a vent, rinse out anything that's been in the water, and it'll do the job for years.

Long drives, grids and gullies

The drive is usually where the difficulty lies, not the drop point. Tell us whether the last stretch is bitumen, gravel or a paddock track, the width of the narrowest gate, and the rating of any grid the truck has to cross. Old timber grids and culverts over gullies are what stop deliveries in this country.

Granite and sandy loam country drains quickly after rain but can wash out on slopes and creek crossings. If a crossing is marginal, we'll talk through an alternative drop point near the road rather than chance it.

Where we deliver around Gin Gin

Gin Gin itself, Wallaville, Bullyard, Tirroan, Moolboolaman, Monduran and the lake side, Kolonga, Maroondan, Delan and out along the roads towards Mount Perry and Lowmead. Further inland, the Gayndah page covers the North Burnett, and the farming belt closer to the coast is on the Childers page.

Truck access in Gin Gin

Mostly long driveways and station tracks, which are fine when they're dry and honest trouble when they're not. Two things worth checking before we load: the rating on any grid we have to cross, and whether the last few hundred metres is a formed road or a paddock track. Rural theft is the reason half the containers out this way get bought, so it's worth putting it where it's visible from the house rather than tucked out the back.

For any address, the driver needs firm and level standing, room for the truck (around 20m of straight run for a tilt-tray, about 30m of working length for a sidelifter) and nothing low overhead. Getting the truck in on a Wide Bay block covers the detail.

Gin Gin questions

Can you get a container down a long station track?

Usually, if it's dry, wide enough and any grids are rated for a loaded truck. Tell us the track surface, the narrowest gate and the grid ratings, and send a photo if you can. If the last part is doubtful, we'll suggest a firm drop point closer to the road.

What's the best container for fodder and fencing gear?

For hay, feed or anything electrical, a used cargo-worthy unit — checked wind and watertight — is the right grade. For steel posts, droppers and wire, a cheaper as-is unit may be enough, as long as you accept it isn't sold watertight.

Will a container stop theft on an empty block?

Nothing is theft-proof, but a container with a lock box is much harder to get into than a shed or roller door. Put it where it can be seen, use a good-quality shrouded padlock, and don't leave the keys on the property.

Can a boat fit inside a container?

A small tinny on its trailer fits in a 20ft, and a larger boat usually needs a 40ft. Measure the overall length, width and height on the trailer, including the motor, and compare it with the door opening on our dimensions page.
